Certo la forzata assenza (causa rovinosa caduta al Delfinato con conseguenti fratture multiple e lungo stop dalla gare) di Chris Froome, leader carismatico e favorito n.1, potrebbe accelerare la crescita di un atleta che sin dagli esordi ha dimostrato di avere una marcia in più.
Ineos: leadership per due – All’interno dello squadrone capitanato da sir Dave Brailsford, c’è un altro “gallo”: Geraint Thomas, che partirà sabato 6 con il dorsale n. 1. Il gallese, dopo anni di lavoro di gregariato all’interno di Sky, in cui ha riscaldato le zuppe per i capitani, soprattutto per Froome, ha trovato la stagione perfetta con i successi nel Critérium du Dauphiné e, soprattutto, al Tour de France. Lui che, in tanti anni di onorata carriera, aveva ottenuto come best performance in un GT solo due quindicesimi posti al Tour (2015-16). Certo il gallese (pluricampione olimpico e mondiale su pista nell’inseguimento a squadre) vorrà riconfermarsi alla Grande Boucle, ma la recente caduta al Tour de Suisse potrebbe averne inficiato la condizione e poi, non dimentichiamolo, pur essendo un fior di atleta ha già avuto un grande premio alla sua carriera con il trionfo dello scorso luglio dove, comunque, non ha rubato nulla, anzi è stato un degno vincitore grazie anche ad un’armata invincibile al suo fianco. Giocano a suo sfavore anche il non aver ottenuto risultati di rilievo dopo l’ebbrezza in giallo di dodici mesi fa e il fatto di dover sopportare una pressione (che nel 2018 non aveva) alla quale non è certo avvezzo. La prima settimana potrebbe essere sufficiente a stabilire la gerarchia in casa Ineos. Bernal, dal canto suo, sembra già maturo per puntare al bersaglio pieno.
Punti di forza – Una maturità mentale e atletica (ricordate il Tour 2018?) sicuramente più elevate rispetto ad un ragazzo della sua verde età (22 anni), sono questi, uniti ad una squadra abituata da anni a dominare la scena nel palcoscenico più prestigioso del mondo, i punti a favore del sudamericano. Senza tralasciare un altro aspetto di non secondaria importanza: è un vincente. Quest’anno si è accaparrato le classifiche finali di due fra le più blasonate corse a tappe: la Parigi-Nizza a marzo e il Giro di Svizzera a giugno. È già tanta roba, ma Egan non si scompone, vuole il Tour!
Punti di debolezza… le cadute – A pensar male si fa peccato, ma spesso ci si azzecca e Bernal nella sua ancora breve esperienza da professionista annovera già alcuni assaggi con l’asfalto non proprio felici: ultima tappa della Volta a Catalunya 2018 (quando fu costretto al ritiro quando era saldamente secondo nella Generale, sarebbe stato il primo podio World Tour); il ruzzolone nella Clasica San Sebastian 2018 che gli ha precluso un’eventuale partecipazione alla Vuelta e al durissimo mondiale di Innsbruck; infine la frattura della clavicola una settimana prima del via dell’ultimo Giro d’Italia, che avrebbe corso da capitano unico. Solo sfortuna o qualche indecisione nella guida del mezzo?
Una cosa è sicura, nonostante per la prima volta dal 2012 (quell’anno c’era pure Bradley Wiggins che vinse) nella Ineos (ieri Sky) non ci sia Froome, la formazione faro sarà sempre la compagine britannica e due capitani dello spessore di Thomas e Bernal farà sì che il peso della corsa gravi sulle loro spalle.
