Podi GT – Solo Anquetil, Merckx, Hinault e Gimondi davanti allo Squalo

Il Giro n. 102, andato in archivio con lo storico successo dell’ecuadoregno Richard Carapaz, ha permesso a Vincenzo Nibali di scalare un altro gradino nella speciale classifica dei podi nei Grandi Giri: adesso sono 11 per il siciliano, un bottino di assoluto prestigio che lo avvicina ai grandissimi.

Da Verona 2010 a Verona 2019 – Coincidenza vuole che il primo podio Nibali lo conquistò a Verona, al termine del Giro 2010 vinto dall’allora compagno di squadra e capitano in seno alla Liquigas Ivan Basso. Da allora ne è passata acqua sotto i ponti e Nibali è diventato, di gran lunga il miglior interprete italiano nei GT non solo del decennio ma di tutto il XXI secolo. Quel ragazzo, non ancora 26enne che l’anno prima si era ben distinto al Tour caratterizzato dall’infuocata lotta tra Contador (il campione del momento) e Lance Armstrong (tornato a competere dopo 4 anni), separati in seno all’Astana. Nibali diede le prime dimostrazioni di tenuta nelle tre settimane, giungendo a Parigi in settima posizione. Poi, il 2010 lo consacra campione con il citato podio (3°) al Giro e con il successo nella Vuelta a Espana, 20 anni dopo l’ultima vittoria di un azzurro (Giovannetti, 1990).

2012: il primo podio al Tour – Sempre in maglia Liquigas, Vincenzo si piazza nuovamente terzo nel Giro 2011 dominato da Alberto Contador; la squalifica ex post del madrileno (per positività al Tour 2010, ma non nella corsa rosa) riscrive la classifica, con la vittoria assegnata al secondo, il compianto Michele Scarponi, che mai sentì suo quel Giro vista la manifesta superiorità di Contador, mentre Nibali passa al secondo gradino del podio. Dopo una Vuelta opaca nel 2011, Vincenzo torna alla Grande Boucle nel 2012 inserendosi autorevolmente nel dominio Sky (1° Bradley Wiggins, 2° Chris Froome) con un terzo posto che fa ben sperare per il futuro. A fine anno, Nibali si trasferisce nella corazzata Astana e ha inizio il periodo vincente dello Squalo.

2013-2016: gli anni della consacrazione definitiva – Nel sodalizio kazako, sotto la sapiente regia tecnica di Giuseppe Martinelli e sempre con il fido Paolo Slongo (che lo segue dai tempi della Liquigas) al suo fianco, Nibali raggiunge l’apice conquistando subito il Giro 2013 e poi realizzando un autentico capolavoro al Tour de France 2014 (sedici anni dopo l’ultimo acuto azzurro, firmato da uno strepitoso Marco Pantani). Quel Tour viene stravinto dal messinese (con oltre 7’sul secondo), che vince ben 4 tappe e indossa per 19 giorni la maglia gialla (come Gimondi nel 1965). Un trionfo. Con il successo nella massima corsa a tappe francese, Nibali entra nel ristretto cerchio di super campioni capaci di vincere tutte e tre le principali corse a tappe al mondo. Da non dimenticare anche il secondo posto alla Vuelta 2013, forse il suo rammarico più grande per un successo sfumato, per aver sottovalutato il sorprendente Chris Horner, vincitore all’età di 42 anni! Nel 2016, ultimo anno Astana, Vincenzo realizza un’altra impresa, capovolgendo negli ultimi giorni del Giro d’Italia, un destino che sembrava segnato. Addirittura fuori dal podio, riesce prima a spodestare Kruijswijk (complice una caduta del tulipano in discesa) e poi Esteban Chaves il penultimo giorno di corsa. Un Giro praticamente perso e poi conquistato con classe e determinazione.

2017-19: gli anni della maturità – Con l’inseparabile Slongo, approda al Team Bahrain-Merida. Il 2017 è un anno che gli frutta il terzo posto al Giro (successo di Tom Dumoulin davanti a Nairo Quintana) e poi il secondo alla Vuelta, dopo un’accesa lotta con Froome. Il resto è storia di questi giorni.

Dopo oltre 50 anni, Anquetil comanda la classifica con 13 podi! – Il più talentuoso, elegante e al tempo stesso sregolato (soprattutto nella vita) campione della storia: Jacques Anquetil. Il fuoriclasse francese ha conquistato la bellezza di 13 podi (8 vittorie) spalmati su dieci anni (dal trionfo al Tour 1957 al terzo posto al Giro ’67); alle spalle del grande cronoman normanno troviamo Eddy Merckx (11 vittorie!), Bernard Hinault (10 successi) e Felice Gimondi (5). Nibali è andato a fare compagnia a Froome, ma il keniano già è lanciato verso il dodicesimo al prossimo Tour de France.
