Davide Formolo si aggiudica il tricolore dopo una gara d’attacco, che lo ha visto prima rientrare sul drappello al comando e poi involarsi per aggiudicarsi l’ambita maglia. Per il portacolori della Bora-Hansgrohe, questo titolo rappresenta un importante passo in avanti nella sua crescita di atleta. Alle sue spalle, il gruppo inseguitore è stato regolato da Sonny Colbrelli su Alberto Bettiol.

L’attacco a 60 km dalal conclusione – Una vera impresa, quella firmata dal veronese che, uscito dal gruppo assieme ad altri sei, li ha poi staccati nelle ultime tre tornate di un circuito tortuoso. Apoteosi per Formolo – L’ultimo giro è stato condotto da Formolo con grande generosità, ma anche intelligenza, andando a spendere le residue energie dopo una gara d’attacco e caratterizzata da un gran caldo. A Compiano, dove nel 1981 aveva vinto il titolo Francesco Moser, forse nasce un nuovo campione del nostro ciclismo. Originario di Negrar (Verona), 26 anni, professionista dal 2014 con due sole vittorie prima di oggi: la quarta tappa del Giro 2015 e la settima tappa alla Volta a Catalunya di quest’anno; ma anche tanti piazzamenti: tre top-ten nei GT (10° al Giro 2017-18; 9° alla Vuelta 2016); vicino al successo nella Liegi 2017, quando venne raggiunto a meno di un km, quindi 7° l’anno scorso e, soprattutto, 2° nel 2019, dove solo un grandissimo Fuglsang gli ha negato la vittoria. Il trionfo di oggi potrebbe rappresentare un nuovo punto di partenza nella carriera dell’atleta veronese.
